The name of the mountain Lake Iskanderkul expires on behalf of Alexander the great, who in Tajikistan and Central Asia, Iran and Afghanistan (in the East) is called Iskandari Zulkarnain (Iskander two-horned). The word "Kul" (from the Tajik language – Kul) means "lake", so the name "Iskandarkul" or "Iskanderkul" comes from these two separate words Ikandar+Kul. The validity of this definition is historical; when Alexander the great conquered the communities to come to Central Asia, he passed through this mountain lake and stayed there for a while, then from Central Asia to India.
The lake is located at an altitude of 2195 meters above sea level, in the spurs of the Kuhiston mountain node, between the Western extremities of the Hissar and Zerafshan ranges.
